This article is devoted to the problems of sustainable development of rural areas of Russia, as well as the prospects of such development. The main challenges facing the development of rural areas of Russia as a whole are stated. Then sustainable development is concretized and its complexities in relation to functioning in the conditions of Russian rural territories are discussed in detail. Finally, conclusions are drawn about the prospects for overcoming the problems.
