The prose hymns of Aelius Aristides (117-180 AD) to the gods are an important source of information about the religious views and beliefs of not only their author but also of his time. The elements of Aristides’ “theology”, clearly represented both in the hymn Regarding Zeus and in the hymn Regarding Serapis, fully reflect the religious syncretism of his era, that tended to reconcile the traditional Greek polytheism with the popular in the 2nd century monotheistic theory of the Stoics.
