Worldwide recognition of A.P. Chekhov, as a playwright, occurred not only thanks to his innovative psychological-realistic method, but also thanks to performances of the Moscow Art Theater directed by K.S. Stanislavsky, which spectators of Europe and America could see during a forced foreign tour of the theater in the 1920s. This visit to Old and New Worlds caused a wave of dramatic imitations and exceptional interest in Stanislavsky system. It can be argued that Chekhov largely determined the development of theater in the twentieth century - both theatrical drama and performing art, requiring an actor to focus not only on a text, but on a subtext. Influence of his dramatic writing is especially noticeable in work of an American writer Tennessee Williams. This article is devoted to analysis of one of his plays - «A Streetcar Named Desire».
