The article is aimed at analyzing British pub signs as a linguistic, cultural and visual phenomenon. The author identifies pragmatic functions most relevant for pub signs throughout their history. Pub signs are viewed as a type of advertising discourse based on the pragmatic aim of influence. Different types of creolization (image, colours, font) and devices used (stylization, word play) are investigated.
