The article deals with results of a comparative study of language criticism in German and Russian media-texts. The goal of the study is to define specific features of language criticism from the cultural linguistics view in media-discourses of both countries. The materials are borrowed from German and Russian online-media for the period from 2017 to 2021. The main method of research is the method of the multifaceted discourse analysis that takes into account the trans-textual situation, intra-textual features and positions of actors. The German studies distinguish a scientific and an amateur criticism of language, the Russian studies do not detect this difference; as a result, the practical criticism of language in Russia has some features of popular science. The language criticism in German media deals generally with issues of political correctness. The idea of correct use of the language gives an opportunity to discuss deliberate changes of speech habits. The language criticism in Russian media demonstrates an individual point of view on the language problems and an interest to observance of the language norms; the language is considered as a self-developing system. For the language criticism in Russian media a participation of professional linguists is typical, therefore the science-based position is prevailing. The language criticism in German media is realized by linguists, journalists and public figures, which demonstrates the public character of language problems. The study of language criticism in comparative aspect based on new language material contributes to developing of cultural linguistics.
