N2 - Hybridization of media systems is today not only a process but also a theoretical framework uniting Internet studies and more traditional media&political studies. In a hybrid media system, Twitter can allegedly become a ‘crossroads of discourses’ due to its openness, de-hierarchization, and spontaneity. This would be especially relevant for transitional democracies; among those, Russia constitutes a nearly perfect object for researching upon political agenda setting in social media. Our research focuses on structural and content aspects of discussion on anti-migrant bashings in Biryulyovo (Moscow) in October 2013. Methods of research include automated web crawling, framing analysis via semantic coding, and interpretation of descriptive statistics. Preliminary results suggest unexpectedly high level of mediatization of the discussion. The ‘crossroads’ nature of the discussion showed up but in such a way that makes Twitter differ from elite communicative milieus like the Russian Facebook.
