Aging is one of the most complex challenges for researchers from different disciplines. On one hand, aging person acquires a set of effective and protective skills through out his life, such as better self-regulation of emotions and behavior. On the other hand, older adult needs to cope with health problems, sometimes financial challenges, losses that make one vulnerable and exposed to daily and life stresses. In our study we hypothesized that comparison of aging people in Russia and Bulgaria can reveal similarities and differences in coping behavior with regard to age, gender, type of accommodation. Participants were 292 older adults aged 55-78 living in Russia (n=147) and Bulgaria (n=145). Method used for assessment of coping behavior was "Ways of Coping" by R.Lazarus and S.Folkman in Russian adaptation (by T. Kryukova, E. Kuftyak) and in Bulgarian adaptation (by L. Babakova). Results showed that Russian older adults are more prone to use selfcontrolling and seeking social support. Bulgarian older adults living in special facilities were more likely to use confrontive coping rather than those living at home, on the contrary Russian older adults used confrontive coping mostly at home. Cluster analysis of the data showed similar structure of the coping strategies in Russia and Bulgaria. In both samples strategies formed two cluster that could be generalized as "progressive" or "resourceful" reaction and "negative" or "destructive" reaction.
