We are invited to this conference so that we can predict the future of work and the future of leisure, but I am an historian by trade, and I have a natural preference for description of the past over prediction of the future. Therefore I shall in this paper instead describe work and leisure in England circa AD 1700. For this purpose, I will begin with some late seventeenth-century estimates of wealth and population from the English herald and statistician Gregory King.
