Since speech is traditionally considered an important means of portraying characters in a literary text, the study explores the idiolects of fictional characters with a focus on their auditory properties. The underlying assumption is that there exists a certain range of speech features employed by authors of books for children to create characters’ speech patterns that appears to be particularly appealing to the target audience, which can be explained by the specifics of early child development. The present case study of R. Dahl’s three characters shows how skillfully he employs various phonological devices to create different “speech portraits” in his most famous books for children as The BFG, The Witches, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
