Blake found in Gray's poetry an opportunity to reflect his own feelings concerning the Lower and Upper worlds and а number of respective threshold moments - particularly in his illustrations of Gray's «gothic odes» («The Descent of Odin», «The Fatal Sisters») and «The Bard. A Pindaric Ode». The multiple water colour illustrations to Gray's poetry created by Blake (116 in total!) reveal that both poets were inspired by the medieval Gothic style. The Gothic influence on their art has been seen through their depiction of space, deities, and mythological heroes by using Gothic art forms to convey mysterious atmosphere and magnificent images.
