The article dwells upon the linguistic nature of two opposite rhetorical devices - overstatement and understatement: their cognitive and intentional aspects, language means of expression; and describes the pragmatic mechanisms of achieving similar perlocutionary goals - the effective persuasion of an adressee in the represented interpretation of a described object/situation.
