The authors turn to the study of vigilantism as a specific form of civil activity, which acquires new features in the digital era. Digital vigilantes (watchful citizens) aspire for the role of a significant subject of the public policy by aiming to regulate “normal” behavior, may use aggressive and nearly extremist forms of interaction in the social networks. Intensive development of technologies and information production, which the society fails to acquire and interpret in time, are conductive of this process; digital vigilantes heavily rely on emotions and spontaneous reactions. Digital vigilantism presents an interdisciplinary problem that requires both conceptualization and profound empirical research.
