The article presents a fragment of the programme of functional comparative grammar of the Balkan languages, using the conjunctive category as an example. It provides a definition of the Balkan conjunctive and compiles an inventory of conjunctive forms. Using material from a Balkan language with a grammaticalised conjunctive - Albanian - a functional matrix of the conjunctive is proposed which can be used for a general Balkan projection. The article also raises questions about the regularity and predictability of inter-Balkan grammatical correspondences and the restrictions imposed by both areal and intrasystemic factors on inter-Balkan isofunctionality.
