The purpose of the work is to show what role the Delphic oracle played in the history of Sparta and, in particular, in the fate of a number of Spartan kings. The author gives an analysis of the main literary sources onthis subject.Thespecificexamples oftheinteractionofSpartankings andDelphicpriests aregiven and the results of this interaction are analyzed. The author concluded that, especially in the 5th century, the Spartan kings had great authority in Delphi. They managed to carry out a series of radical political actions with the help of priests, in one case depriving an undesirable co-ruler of power, and in the other -restoring the exiled king on the throne. The illegal methods by which the kings acted in Delphi suggest that the Spartan kings differed greatly in their mentality from their fellow citizens.
