The article considers the origin of the term “discourse”. Special attention is paid to the views of the scientists, who differentiate the concepts “discourse” and “speech”. The author mentions the cases of misidentification of discourse and speech units and concludes that to avoid misinterpretations the linguists should stick to the definition of discourse proposed by the creators of this notion. Accordingly, discourse should be considered as a mental structure performing the mediating function between language and speech.
