The work explores the rhetoric of power in 14th-century Siena, which in this case includes many different ways of convincing the citizens of Siena of the political superiority of the “popolans” who defeated the “nobiles” and formed their own people's governments. Such rhetoric is observed in the case of the government of the Nine Signori (1287-1355). We study the material оf legislative documents, narrative and pictorial sources characterizing the specifics of representing the first people's government of Siena. The author concludes that the political rhetoric of the Nine demonstrates not only the desire of the rich people to assert themselves in power, but also their understanding of the need for dialogue with the rest of society.
