The article is dedicated to the discussion of the original meaning of Athena’s epithet γλαυκῶπις in Homeric poetry. The outline of linguistic theories about the origin of the adjective as well as the analysis of historical and literary evidence about the cult of owl in Athens shows that originally this religious epithet of Athena was connected with the colour of the eyes of the goddess.
