The edition of Horace published by Friedrich Vollmer (edd. mai. 1907; 1912) has a special place in the history both of textual criticism and of its visual representation on a printed page. Though Vollmer’s edition was not widespread and was considered — by its author himself — as a kind of epitome of Otto Keller and Alfred Holder’s edition, the material we find in it seems to be quite sufficient for reading ancient text with regard to its manuscript transmission, whereas in other twentieth-century Teubner editions the original method proposed by Keller and Holder was either furtherly complicated (by Friedrich Klingner) or repeated (by István Borzsák). Two passages (Epod. 5, 58: Suburanae/suburbanae canes; Serm. II, 6, 86: lardi frusta/frustra dedit) are discussed as samples of moderate and comprehensive structure of the apparatus criticus used in Vollmer’s edition.
