He article deals with the concept of trust, which determines the conditions for successful social action and interaction. The task is to analyze the problems of this concept that are already present and that are becoming relevant in digital culture. The author analyzes the problematic nature of this concept in two aspects. The first one is connected with the fact that it sets both the conditions of active action and passivity of the subject of culture. In this context, the author emphasizes the difference between primary, secondary trust, and the situation of uncertainty characterizing the transition from the first to the second. The second aspect is related to the fact that trust can refer to various interacting actors: people, things, technical devices, social institutions. In this context, the author notes possibility to speak about trust in things and technologies when they are considered as the embodiment of certain social, cultural or cognitive human functions and actively operate within the framework of complex socio-technical systems. The author defines the digital culture through the functions of digital devices, as well as through their role in the public space. Since trust is considered in the article as a condition for constructive social interaction, digital technologies are taken in their function of providing opportunities for expanding communication and including active participants in it. As an example of interaction providing by digital technologies author considers the interaction of experts, the public and political actors on scientific judgments that serve as the basis for making socially significant decisions. Digital technologies providing openness of expert judgments and their discussions serve scientific validity and social robustness of final decisions. However, their function of mediation in communication ensuring openness, transparency and involvement of active citizens does not cause trust, provokes an increase in uncertainty, contradicts the desire to preserve privacy in real communication practices. This demonstrates why digital technologies exacerbate the problem of trust that has always existed in culture.
