The article deals with the evaluative capacity of an extended metaphor and the interaction of the descriptive and evaluative aspects of extended metaphors. The research is carried out within the framework of contemporary metaphor theories. Different types of extended metaphors have been analysed. The paper analyzes the structure of the expanded metaphor and demonstrates how its structural elements contribute to the transfer of the estimated meaning. The special role of metaphorical elements and elements of double interpretation in the implementation of evaluation is noted. Much attention is given to the structure of an extended metaphor, the role of its structural elements in conveying evaluation is highlighted. The fact that negative extended metaphors prevail is stressed. It is shown that extended metaphors may be employed to facilitate the portrayal of literary characters.
