The article is devoted to one of the subtle mechanisms of speech - psychological distance between people during conversation. The purpose of the study is to substantiate the fact that an individual’s desire to avoid too close contact in communication with the interlocutor is an initial fact of life, which is represented in the text. We build distance in a dialogue in a hidden way. The novelty of the work is the description of the linguistic means by which one can create necessary distance in the course of communication. The author comes to the conclusion that adhering to the established distance in the dialogue allows a person to preserve identity and protect the intimate side of his/her life from idly curious people’s encroachments.
