The research proceeds from the relative status of Latin,Russian and English during the Hanseatic period. The author puts forwardtwo hypotheses: those of communicative mediation and rhetorical readingin the Hanseatic League. The dynamics of Latin is described in diversesociocultural and temporal contexts. Occurrences of Latin epigraphsin Russian translations of contemporary English fiction, described as“Hanse'sLinguistic Shadow”, receive a cognitive treatment.
