The conference is dedicated to the philosophy of Nicolai Hartmann (1882-1950), an outstanding German philosopher who made a significant contribution to the development of such philosophical disciplines as ontology, epistemology, the philosophy of nature, the philosophy of spirit (Geist), ethics, aesthetics, the history of philosophy, etc., in the last century, as one of the last thinkers to develop an integral system of philosophy, almost covering the entire sphere of objects of human knowledge. Hartmann was born in Riga, which was then on the territory of the Russian Empire. From 1903 to 1905, he studied classical philology and philosophy at the Saint-Petersburg Imperial University. He then studied philosophy in Marburg under the leadership of such famous neo-Kantians as H. Cohen and P. Natorp. Over time, he broke away from the neo-Kantianism of his German teachers and developed his “new ontology.” During this period, he became a friend and colleague of M. Scheler, a competitor to M. Heidegger. Hartmann also made a brilliant university career, occupying during his life the position of professor at the universities of Marburg, Cologne, Berlin and Göttingen. Contemporary interest in the philosophical legacy of Nicolai Hartmann is growing all over the world. The study and interpretation of his works show that such characteristics as “one of the first scientist-philosophers in the world” (M. Heidegger) and “one of the most significant figures in modern philosophy” (J. M. Bochenski), are far from groundless. The tradition of research on the works of Nicolai Hartman was strong also in Leningrad (later, Saint Petersburg), in particular at our university. This conference is designed, on the one hand, to continue this tradition, and on the other hand, to give a new impetus to international cooperation in researching the works of this remarkable thinker. The conference involves thirty speakers from countries including Argentina, Belarus, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russia, and the USA. Russia will be represented by such cities as Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, and Rostov-on-Don. The working languages of the seminar are English and Russian.
