On Possibility of Geo-radiolocation application in hydrological investigation in rivers mouth areas

Аннотация

Hie remits of a field experiment aimed at detecting saline and fresh water boundary (haiocline) in the Keret' River mouth area (Chupuukaya inlet, the White Sea) with die use of ground penetrating radar (GFR) are presented.. It was the first case of GPR application for solving hydrological problems. Non-trivial structure ofhalocline and its dairy variations have been detected in GFR records obtained from the board of a small boat along the profile of 700 meters long. Besides, variations of air-wave amplitude reflect the differences of fresh water conductivity along the profile. To verify GPR survey data the synchronous measurements of salinity depth variations have been carried out and satisfactory coincidence of GPR data and direct salinity measurements at different phases of a tidal cycle have been demonstrated. The data obtained confirm the possibility of using GPR survey for studies of saline and fresh water boundary in the rivers mouth area.
