Mercury emissions from coal-fired power generation in South Africa, according to the report by the Department of Environmental Affairs has been estimated at 39.4 tons/annum for 2009. There is a high degree of uncertainty in this number since the bulk of the emissions are based on the emission factors. Many of the emission factor calculations were based on irregular data on mercury levels in coals, because no latest scientific information was available at the time. The lack of information about mercury content in the different coals utilized by the power generation sector in South Africa possibly was created by the absence of proper analytical methods of coal analysis. Over the next 20 years, mercury emissions from the coal-fired power generation sector are expected to decrease from 90% to 65%.
