One of the most important problems related to the use of nuclear energy and of advanced nuclear fuel cycle is the immobilization of minor actinides as well as of rare earth fractions and corrosion products present in high level radioactive waste (HLW) (Lutze and Ewing 1988; Ewing 1999, 2005; Stefanovsky et al. 2004; Yudintsev et al. 2007a; Weber et al. 2009; Livshits and Yudintsev 2008). The most enduring proposal was made by Ringwood et al. (1979), who invented Synroc, a polyphase waste form consisting of titanates.
