Cognitive and affective disorders in ovarian cancer patients

This review presents the results of the study of cognitive and effective functioning in ovarian cancer patients (OC). Ovarian cancer patients (N=82) were assessed at different stages of cancer treatment. Affective disorders were evaluated by means of HADS and MADRS; for assessment of cognitive domains, BACS was applied. The data analysis was completed by means of ANOVA, correlation and linear regression analysis. It was revealed that in OC patients, two cognitive domains are mostly impaired: motor functions (48%) and speed of data processing (46%). The results of linear regression analysis prove that cognitive impairments are caused by disease worsening (canceromatosis and FIGO stage). Statistically significant association between the amount of received chemo treatment and cognitive deficit was not revealed. Affective disorders (anxiety and depression) were present in 18% and 19.5% OC patients, respectively. Such disorders were present at all stages of the disease and caused by psychological and somatic factors. Anxiety and depression may play a mediating role in the development of cognitive impairments.
