The problem of electromagnetic wave diffraction by a transparent body is studied numerically. The cases of contrast boundary and smooth transition from the vacuum to the body are examined and the leading term of the field asymptotic expansion is obtained by means of the boundary layer approach. The propagation factors of the waves are then obtained by solving partial differential equations that describe the ratio of electric or magnetic permeabilities of the body.
