On the mechanism of topazes colouring and their spectral characteristics

Abstract

The topazes that are available at gemological markets often have treated colour obtained by heating or irradiating. The research conducted by the authors allows to identify treated and naturally coloured topazes by using absorption spectra. The presence of the wide region at 570-565 nm neatly distinguishes the irradiated blue stones. The difference between spectra does not depend on the intensity of treated stones colour. The authors have also discovered the divergence between absorption spectra of blue topazes of different genesis-pegmatite and greisen. The intensive band at 440-452 nm is characteristic of pegmatite topazes and is absent in blue stones from greisen.
