N.Ja. Marr and Marrism in Western historiography

Abstract

The article is devoted to analysis of the famous Soviet scientist Nicholas Marr (1964- 1934), his "new linguistic doctrine" and its role in the development of Russian and world linguistics as viewed by Western historiography. The author analyzed the characteristics of the research produced by foreign experts to the problem, starting with works published during the life of the scholar, and up to recent studies. The strengths and weaknesses of their works are indicated, as well as research trends.
