Abstract

In pre-revolutionary Russia, in the context of growing dissatisfaction with state education standards, progressive pedagogical ideas were widely developed, aimed primarily at shaping the personality of the child. One of the successfully implemented private pedagogical initiatives was the Commercial School in Lesnoy. Its distinctive feature was the participation in the organization and activities of the largest Russian scientists - professors of the nearby St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute, which became the embodiment of the reformist ideas of the progressive part of the scientific community and government, a training centre for rapidly developing industry and economy. The study was written on the basis of published materials, as well as materials from the foundation of the Society for the Distribution of Commercial, Art and Industrial Education in Lesnoy, created to provide support for the activities of the new educational institution. The results of the study showed that such scientists as the director of the Institute, Prince A.G. Gagarin, A.P. Fan der Fleet, K.P. Boklevsky, F.Yu. Levinson-Lessing, M.A. Dyakonov and a number of others took an active part in the development of the basic principles of the School functioning, educational programs, the formulation of tasks and values transmitted to students, and the creation of a comprehensive development strategy. They fully shared the progressive pedagogical installations broadcast by the leading domestic initiators of school reform. We are talking about the joint training of boys and girls, orientation toward mastering practical skills by students, increasing the availability of education, fostering a team spirit, and attention to physical health.
