Informational-energy characteristics of different types of cognitive activity

Abstract

The results of two independent researches aimed at revealing of dynamics of neurophysiological (EEG) and psychophysiological (GSR) indices in the process of cognitive activity: 1) different types of conceptual transformations ("vertical" and "horizontal") (n = 34); 2) different types of perceptual scanning by the example of reflectivity/impulsivity cognitive style (n = 31) (subjects' age - 17-33) are presented. The higher productivity of conceptual transformations is, the less complex EEG curve is. This can be interpreted as a tendency of energy expenditure decreasing in the observed frequency range. Reflective cognitive style is shown to be more cost-based form of cognitive functioning in comparison with impulsive one. The conclusion that the character of informational - energy ratios while fulfilling different types of cognitive activity depend on factor-mediator - mental efforts is drawn.
