N1 - Funding Information: The research was supported by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany. The author is highly indebted to Profs. P. Schäfer (Institut fur Geowissen-schaften, Christian-Albrechts-Universitat zu Kiel) and C. Nielsen (Zoological Museum, University of Copenhagen), and to Dr. P. Taylor (The Natural History Museum, London) for the opportunity to conduct research projects in the departments they headed, and for much encouragement and useful discussions; he is grateful to Professor J. Ryland (School of Biological Sciences, University of Wales, Swansea), to Drs M. Spenser Johns and P.Taylor (The Natural History Museum, London) and to Dr. M. Pietersen and H. Espersen (Zoological Museum, University of Copenhagen) for their kind help in searching for rare literature. Special gratitude to Drs. K.B. Hansen (Zoological Museum, University of Copenhagen). J.-G. Harmelin (Station Marien d’Endoume, Centre d’Oceanologie de Marseille), P. Hayward (School of Biological Sciences, University of Wales, Swansea) and D. Gordon (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, New Zealand, Wellington) for historical information and taxonomic remarks. E. Lobastova (Biological Sientific Research Institute of St.-Petersburg State University) and T. Ostrovskaya kindly translated some papers from French and German.

N2 - The basic stages characterizing research of brood chambers (ovicells) in cheilostome bryozoans are reviewed, from their first description by J. Ellis in 1755 up to the present. The problems concerning contradictory views of researchers on the structure, formation, and function of ovicells are considered in detail. Special attention was paid to the development of modern terminology. Based on recent data, including paleontological data, the prospects are displayed of studying brood structures in Cheilostomata in order to better understand the phylogeny and evolution of their reproductive strategies.
