Benchmark of approaches to dynamics of axially impacted rod

Abstract

The problem under consideration is the axial elastic impact by a body on a thin rod. The results of theoretical, finite-element and experimental approaches to the solution of the problem are compared. The theoretical approach takes into account both the propagation of longitudinal waves in the rod and the local deformation due to the Hertz model. The results are compared with the results of three-dimensional dynamic problem in the frame of finite-element approach, in which the wave propagation and local deformation are automatically taken into account. These approaches are confirmed by the results of a full-scale test.
