In the second half of the XIX century in Japan new government with the Emperor at its head gained power, and reforms in all spheres of life began. Changes touched on the core principles Japanese society had been based upon. One of the main roles in this process belonged to foreign specialists invited by the government, many of whom were Christian missionaries at the same time. Spreading knowledge of modern science and technology, they introduced to their Japanese students basic concepts of Christian morality, some of which, including the idea of equality of man and woman before God, and idea of the ideal Christian household with a very important role of woman as a good wife and wise mother, contradicted the ways of behavior practiced in traditional Japanese society. The article analyzes some aspects of the influence of Christian morality upon the traditional patterns of life in Japanese society in the latter half of the XIX century.
