Abstract

The article analyzes the epistolary form of narrative in the works of J.M.R. Lenz. The letter is treated as a literary form integrated in different genres such as epistolary novel, philosophical essay, and drama. Lenz's epistolary novel “Waldbruder” breaks with the sentimental tradition of psychological portrayal. The written testimonies of multiple characters become unreliable and controversial, and the main focus of Lenz's narration shifts from storytelling to the level of poetological reflection, pointing out the fictitious nature inherent in the epistolary novel genre. On the other hand, letters in Lenz's dramas become tools to express the personalities of characters and achieve a particular psychological portrayal in drama.
