Энклитические частицы -s, -d, -n в современном восточноармянском языке

Abstract

The pronominal system of both Classical and Modern Armenian is based onthree consonant elements ( /s/, /d/, /n/) corresponding to the three persons. Theseelements function as enclitical particles and are believed to exercise a widerange of tasks. They can ‘substitute’ personal, possessive and demonstrativepronouns; they can also be used as definite articles. However, this study showsthat the elements in question should be characterized as possessing a widersemantics and more universal functions. These are independent transcategorialdeictic elements which can mark, among other things, the focus of the utterance.The enclitical particles show a number of unusual characteristics: 1. theirusage doesn’t depend on the corresponding possessive or demonstrativepronouns; 2. while functioning as affixes, they have no fixed position in thesentence; their position is determined by author’s purposes only; 3. they canmark not only nouns, but also other parts of speech, including finite verbs; 4.their demonstrative value is
