Abstract

“The Little Flowers of St. Francis”, written in the second half of the 14th century by a nameless friar, represents one of the most famous medieval European texts in the world. This text is created in volgare, a vivacious and vibrant common italian literary language, and seems to have taken from St. Francis himself the spontaneity and the frankness of expression pertain usually to oral language, and beyond that having absorbed many genres diverse existed in the literature of the Middle Ages. In search of the secret of the unfading beauty of the medieval masterpiece, “The Little Flowers of St. Francis” are explored in this contribution through the prism of various literary genres, as contemporaries to their author as more recents.
