Abstract

One of the reasons of unsatisfactory characterization of alicyclic ketals of aliphatic and alkylaromatic ketones until recently seems to be no mentions of the existence of such compounds in natural objects. Another reason is low yields of these ketals derived from ketones and diols at “standard” acid catalysis. Optimization of the microscale synthesis of such ketals is achieved in the presence of catalytic amounts of cobalt (II) bromide and dimethyl glyoxime. Reliable structure determination of resulting ketals is successfully accomplished with the application of simplest chromatographic parameters, namely differences of retention indices of products and initial substrates (DRI). Such a combination of GC-MS characteristics as homologous increments of retention indices (iRI) are informative not only for group identification of analytes (attribution to corresponding homologous series) and evaluations of their molecular masses (at low intensities of peaks of molecular ions), but for determination of total number of molecular sp3-carbon skeleton branches (N) using the regression relationship N ~ aiRI + b.
