Abstract

Historical and biographical essay on the life and work of an outstanding American physiologist, pathophysiologist and biophysicist Arthur Clifton Guyton to the centenary of his birth. The paper considers childhood and youth of the scientist, his early familiarity with the writer William Faulkner and young Guyton’s enthusiasm for physics and engineering, the beginning of his creative path in thoracic and vascular surgery, the fight against the severe illness that befell him, his transition to scientific and teaching activities in the field of physiology and inculcation of systemic biocybernetic and biophysical approath into medical science and teaching.
