The article deals with the methodological problems of studying of abnormal development. It gives a definition of such concepts as «development», «work», «activity», and «adaptation». Different approaches to the study of mental development, in particular, the approaches proposed by L.S Vigotskiy, A. Gesell, S.L. Rubinstein, and B.G. Ananiev are analyzed. It also presents a description of the methodological principles of study of children with various types of disorder.
