The end of the 19th - early 20th centuries was the top point of creative activity of medievalist and church historian Ivan I. Sokolov (1865-1939). His scientific legacy was neglect-ed by Soviet historiography. Sokolov's attempts in the 1920-1930 years to realize his research projects were unfulfilled because of repressions and his politically unreliable reputation.
