Abstract
The boatmen's songs, bhatiyali and sari, emerged in the Bengal region (Bangladesh and India's state of West Bengal), because the life of its population was linked with the rivers. Over time, these professional folk songs gained popularity and became an important part of Bengali cultural heritage. The issues of translating folk songs from South Asian languages into Russian language are illustrated with the examples of the songs of Bengali boatmen. Incorrectly written lyrics, missing of direct contact with the performer, dialectal lexicon are some of the issues of translating folk songs.
