English dialectal speech, when incorporated in fiction, acquires a hierarchical complex of func- tions: lexical referential meaning, regional attribution, stereotypical characteristic, socio-cultural status, artistic load within a work of literature. In translating, some information is inevitably lost while socio-cultural meaning must be retained by all means to gain an adequate degree of equiv- alence. The translator is supposed to have ample socio-cognitive competence to be able to do it.
