Abstract

The article analyses the word sa-ra-pe-da at the beginning of the Pylos tablet PY Un 718 which gives a list of individual and collective religious offerings. This word is usually interpreted as a composite toponym with the second element πέδον. The article suggests that, judging from the word’s position in the tablet (where it immediately precedes Poseidon’s name), from its formation and typologically close parallels from Archaic Greek poetry, sa-ra-pe-da can be interpreted as Poseidon’s epiclesis (“Earthshaker”) and reconstructed as *Σαλαπέδᾱς or *Σαλασπέδᾱς.
