The article analyzes the novel «The Dead Are Awaiting» by the Greek writer Dido Sotiriou. Particular attention is paid to the concepts of «hellen», «romei», ип6боиЛо! (Russian «enslaved»), paYia6eg (Russian «slaves»). In the beginning of the novel the terms «hellen» and «romei» are considered to be synonyms; yet, as the action progresses, the two categories are no longer signify the same. In particular, the issue of the relationship between the hellens and the romeioi is being scrutinized in the context of the Greco-Turkish war. The matter of dominant culture and the “conflict” between the nations: Turkish and Greek is under review.
