The main aim of this article is to analyze those semantic, syntactic and structural elements as well as aesthetic means that are used by the authors when addressing the notion of silence in literary and poetic texts. The pragmatic meanings of silence are considered, including that of break of the stereotypical behavior, intentional opposition, feelings of respect, compassion, humility. A special focus is given to the notion of silence and quiteness and the way they are realized in a literary text with a particular focus on figure/ground segregation of sound/pause dichotomy. Accent on intonation patterns, attention to minor sound elements and iconic property of the language result in different sound transformations often realized as echo questions in the text which becomes the aesthetic means of the narrative construction. Attention to punctuation marks, intervals and pauses allows to explore general principles of constructing the notion of silence against the background of word and sound.
