Abstract

The Greek War of Independence is one of the most symbolic and important events in Greek history and Greek culture. This social and cultural experience is important both for Russia and Europe not only as an example of implementation of the initially artificial ideology but also because it is a phenomenon that differs at many points from the invariant typological pattern. Social and economic reasons were less important motivators of the revolutionary movement than intellectual imagination. The Revolution was
«invented» and initiated outside Greece and led to formation of a complex heterogeneous image which included intellectually created national identity together with traditional «internal» commemorative mechanisms of selfidentification. The mythologization of the Greek War of Independence and
the process of its transformation into a product of cultural heritage were almost simultaneous to the War itself. The analysis of literary texts (poets Kalvos and Solomos) along with folklore and field research data from the Peloponnese and from the Greek-speaking region of Mariupol makes it possible to describe different ways of the creation of the local identity and
to assess their relevance today.
