Abstract

The paper proposes brief information on the usage and on the cultural and religious significance of betel chewing in modern Cambodia. Terms for the basic components of betel chewing (betel leaf, areca nut, lime, “Javanese meat”, tobacco) are reviewed and commented upon, with etymological data provided for some of the terms. A separate analysis of “betel terminology” used in “riəc sap” (a special lexicon for the King and the royal family) is proposed.
