Key findings for the project

Abstract title: Sustainable Development Goal 11: Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable – exploring three-dimensional cities.
Presenter: Dr. Nikolai Bobylev, Saint Petersburg State University, n.bobylev@spbu.ru
Keywords: Urbanisation, Sustainable Development Goals, Compact City, Environmental Planning, Urban indicators, three-dimensional planning, Sustainability, Vulnerability, Resiliency.

Urbanisation is one of the main factors of the global environmental change and its driver as well. As urbanisation process accelerates globally, a challenge of finding the most sustainable urban development strategy or principals of this development remains high on a global environment and development agenda, which has been reflected by the Sustainable Development Goal 11: Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. This research has been focusing on urban densification and optimal urban densities, a compact city, and three-dimensional arrangement of cities. A compact city concept has been widely accepted as the most sustainable way to move forward, but the debate on feasibility and achievability of a compact urban living very much continues. A three-dimensional way of conceptualizing urbanization remains a novelty, and this research will describe its challenges, as well as relevance to the Sustainable Development Goal 11 and other goals. Urban Underground Space and its place in global urban agenda will be discussed through a prism of Sustainable Development Goals. Underground spaces are vital when it comes to energy, integrated water and sanitation management, climate adaptation and mitigation. Apart from original research, the presentation will report recent developments at the 9th World Urban Forum convened by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and its side event on Urban Underground Spaces for the Cities of the Future. The presented research has been done as part of a three year international research project on Green Underground: Unlocking the Environmental Potential of Urban Underground Space Use, financed by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation within Research Group Linkage Programme.
